316LN (UNS S31653) stainless steel is a low-carbon, nitrogen-enhanced variant of Type 316 austenitic stainless steel, also identified by the DIN/EN designation 1.4406. Compared to traditional chromium-nickel austenitic steels like Type 304, 316LN offers superior resistance to general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion. It also provides greater creep, stress-rupture, and tensile strength at high temperatures. However, 316LN stainless steel can be prone to sensitization—where chromium carbides form at grain boundaries at temperatures between approximately 900 and 1500°F (425 to 815°C), potentially leading to accelerated corrosion. While the reduced-carbon 316L alloy is less susceptible to sensitization, prolonged exposure within this temperature range may still cause sensitization over time.

The inclusion of nitrogen in the 316LN alloy enhances its resistance to sensitization under certain conditions. This nitrogen also contributes to solid solution hardening, resulting in a higher minimum yield strength compared to the 316L stainless steel. Similar to the 316 and 316L alloys, 316LN provides exceptional resistance to both general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion.

Austenitic stainless steels, such as the 316LN alloy, are commonly processed into a wide range of shapes, from simple to intricate designs. These alloys can be blanked, pierced, and formed using equipment similar to that used for carbon steels. Thanks to their superior ductility, austenitic alloys can be easily shaped through bending, stretching, deep drawing, and spinning. However, due to their higher strength and work hardenability, these alloys require significantly more power during forming operations compared to carbon steels. Proper lubrication is crucial when working with austenitic alloys to manage their high strength and tendency to gall.

Austenitic stainless steels are delivered in a mill-annealed state, making them ready for immediate use. However, heat treatment might be required either during or after fabrication to counteract the effects of cold forming or to dissolve any chromium carbides that have precipitated due to thermal exposure. For the 316LN alloy, solution annealing is performed by heating the material to a temperature between 1900°F and 2150°F (1040°C to 1175°C), followed by air cooling or water quenching, depending on the thickness of the section. It is important to note that 316LN stainless steel cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
