Grade 202 stainless steel, like most austenitic stainless steels, is non-magnetic. It contains about half the amount of nickel found in grade 304, which results in a different alloy composition. Grade 202 Stainless Steel Sheets have approximately 17% chromium, similar to grade 304. This alloy primarily consists of chromium, nickel, and manganese. The characteristics of grade 202 Stainless Steel Rings are comparable to those of austenitic grade 302, but it is not ideal for high-temperature applications. However, it excels at lower temperatures, making ASTM A240 TP 202 Shims particularly suitable for projects in cold environments.
Grade 202 is a precipitation-hardened stainless steel alloy, which benefits from enhanced hardness and toughness due to the precipitation hardening process. This results in improved mechanical properties and yield strength. While its corrosion resistance is generally good to moderate, Grade 202 can be susceptible to rust in moist environments. Consequently, it is not recommended for use in applications involving brine, seawater, or environments with high salt exposure.
