Both 309 Stainless Steel and 309S are austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steels known for their phenomenal corrosion resistance and heat resistance. They maintain excellent strength at both room and elevated temperatures. The SS 309 Rods have low carbon content, which minimizes carbide precipitation and enhances weldability. While they are primarily non-magnetic in their hardened state, they may become slightly magnetic when cold worked.
Grade 309 / 309S Stainless Steel is frequently used for higher temperature applications. While its oxidation resistance surpasses that of alloy 310, its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of alloy 310. Stainless Steel 309 Round Bars are highly weldable and cold formable, though they do require more robust forming machinery. Regular machining techniques are suitable for stainless steel grade 309, but due to its hardness, it can harden more rapidly during processing.
309 / 309S is an austenitic heat-resistant alloy with oxidation resistance up to 1900°F under continuous temperature conditions. When frequent thermal cycling is involved, the alloy remains resistant up to around 1850°F. The high chromium and relatively low nickel content of 309 provides excellent resistance to high-temperature sulfur-bearing environments. However, it has only moderate resistance to carbon retention and is not recommended for use in highly carburizing environments.
