Stainless steel 303 contains additions of sulfur or selenium, with the former denoting stainless steel 303 and the latter referred to as 303se, which indicates alloying with selenium. These elements enhance the machinability properties of WNR 1.4305 square bars, making this alloy an ideal choice for applications demanding superior machinability. In addition to improved machinability, 303 Steel Cold Finished Bars exhibit outstanding galling characteristics.
However, compared to grade 304, the corrosion resistance of this alloy is somewhat lower. The addition of sulfur, while enhancing machinability, does present certain drawbacks in the ASTM A479 UNS S30300 Hex Bar. For instance, this alloy's resistance to corrosion is diminished, and its toughness is slightly compromised. Moreover, areas in the microstructure of the ASTM A276 Type 303 Round Bar that contain sulfur can act as initiators for pitting corrosion. Nevertheless, for both intermittent and continuous use, this alloy demonstrates good resistance to oxidation, withstanding temperatures up to 927°C. However, manufacturers advise against using the JIS SUS 303 Black Bar at temperatures exceeding 760°C due to the higher carbon content, which can promote carbide precipitation and irregular scaling in the 303 Stainless Steel Rod.
While welding this material is generally not recommended, it can be accomplished using electrodes from stainless steel grade 310, making the AISI 303 Threaded Bar a versatile choice. Annealing this alloy offers benefits, including the dissolution of carbide precipitates and achieving high machining rates, with the hardness of the SS 303 Bright Bar typically ranging from 200 to 240 Brinell.
