Stainless Steel 430/431 are martensitic, heat-treatable grades known for excellent corrosion resistance, torque strength, high toughness, and impressive tensile properties. These characteristics make them ideal for bolt and shaft applications. However, due to their high yield strength, these steels cannot be cold-worked and are therefore suitable for operations such as spinning, deep drawing, bending, or cold heading.
Grade 430 (UNS S43000, EN 1.4016) is the most widely used family of ferritic alloys, recognized for its good corrosion resistance against various substances, excellent stress resistance, and formability, coupled with practical mechanical properties. It offers excellent resistance to citric and nitric acid and sulfur gases, though it is slightly less corrosion and heat-resistant than Types 301, 302, and 304. Grade 430 can be employed in certain chemical applications and is a magnetic stainless steel. It can be formed using a variety of roll forming or mild stretch-bending operations, as well as more common drawing and bending processes. However, it has limited weldability and should not be used in the as-welded condition for dynamic or impact-loaded structures.
